Guanajuato, Gto. Mexico

The name of the city, originally "Quashuato", or "Mountainous land of frogs" has its origin in prehispanic legends, that speak of Chichimeca nomads that discovered a rock formation in the shape of a frog - an animal with conotations of good luck and protection.

Around the year 1550 the Spanish conquerors discovered rich deposits of silver in the area. Within a few years Guanajuato was recognized as a town, and in 1679 as a city. The intense economic activity generated by the mines made it possible to built impressive temples and haciendas that have lasted to the present day, and a world class university.

Today, Guanajuato is a center of government, business, educatiion, and culture. The city, protected as a U.N. World Heritage Site, is host every October to the International Cervantino festival, hosting world class performance arts and drawing visitors from around the world. The history and art of Guanajuato can be enjoyed all year long, in multitudes of museums, in music and dance, and in the living rock of the city's buildings and underground roadways.
